I dug out my copy of The Dark Knight Returns the other day, prompted in part by an online discussion about Batman comics, and because I hadn't read it in over ten years. I think I probably like it less now than I did when I first read it back in the 1998ish, but Frank Miller's graphic storytelling still has considerable power.
Another thing I noticed was this:
Is that... is that Matt Murdock?
I've had a brief look online to confirm and no one seems to be talking about it -- although there is another Daredevil cameo in there -- so it's probably not him, but it looks like him and he's talking about a trial, so...
Holy crap, Batman! I've read it multiple times and I've never connected that!
ReplyDeleteIt’s the first thing I thought when I saw the picture before reading what you’d written!
ReplyDeleteI'd say so too, except he also seems to be leaning into some of the deranged criminal-favoring psychobabble that was a running gag in the novel (my favorite was the Arkham Home for the Emotionally Troubled, or whatever it was called).
ReplyDeleteI mean, it REALLY does look like him, and it's kind of amazing no one's pointed it out yet, especially since that other appearance went unseen for so long. (The best part of that link, btw, was that they were like, "oh, Howard the Duck is also in there!" And then quickly adjusted to, "nope, just a shoe!" :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed that! I'm not sure Miller has done any Howard the Duck work, so why that writer thought he'd sneak a Howard reference in, I have no idea.
