Mince Pie Fest 2024: Greggs

The Greggs vegan sausage roll is rightly famous, but are the mince pies any good?

The pastry looks a bit anaemic, and so it proves in terms of taste, with a decent texture but a flavour best described as blaaaaaaaaand. The filling has some nice flavour, although nothing stands out, and as you can probably see, it's a bit stingy. There's something a bit sad about these pies. The sausage rolls are much better. 2 out of 5. #MincePieADay #MincePieFest2024

  1. It looks more like a tart or those things that were like Hot Pockets, but with PB&J in them. Had to look it up, they were called Uncrustables. Yeah, it looks like one of those. Major point deduction on aesthetics alone.

    1. I've just looked them up and yeah, it's interesting how they made the pie look less appetising than the very unappetising name!

  2. Well darn. I appreciate the research! I'm sure there's a hidden gem out there. (Although I have to quibble a bit with CalvinPitt's comment because PB&J Uncrustables are amazing. Unironically worth the probably 10x scaling up in cost for peanut butter and jelly. That crimped, crustless edge...so soft and delicious!)

What I'm hoping for is that one day, you'll find the pie that makes you say, "You can't even tell it's vegan." (I used to be mildly annoyed by that "compliment" to vegan cooking but have come to embrace it as sincere praise relative to what many apparently expect to encounter...and unfortunately, as with this case, may be more common than I'd like to believe...)

  3. Looks like they would travel far if tossed at the right angle! Greggs at the Olympics 2028!
